COAL GROVE — After a one year hiatus, the Memorial Day Championships returned to the Rocky Top Raceway last Friday,

A great field of cars for all classes gathered to kickoff the holiday weekend. Modifieds had the highest car count of the night at 20.

In the 25-lap Late Model A-Main, Jackie Boggs stormed to the lead at the start with Rod Evans right behind him as the two battled for the lead.

Evans peeked the nose of his No.R1 machine under Boggs several times during the races first ten laps but Boggs still held onto the lead.

On lap 11, Evans got a little high in turn one and slid up into the lapped car of Warnie Allen. The contact allowed Kenny Christy to get under Evans and move into the second position with Evans being pushed back to third.

After a lap 12 restart, Christy looked to the inside of Boggs as they battled side by side for the lead off of turn four. Boggs held onto the lead as Christy was now in a battle for second with Evans.

Contact five laps later resulted in a flat tire for Christy as he was forced to make a pit stop and go to the tail of the field.

When the race resumed, Boggs pulled away to a five-car length lead up front as the battle from second on back raged side-by-side. Boggs would come to the checkers to claim his second feature win in a row.

Evans finished second with Rick Combs third, Conley fourth and Christy fifth. Evans won the dash race while C. A. Wentz and Conley won Engines Inc. heat races.

Craig Christian and Shawn Holliday battled side-by-side for the lead at the start of the Modified A-Main.

Christian led the races opening lap with Holliday storming to the lead on lap two. With Holliday leading, the battle from second on back was furious with two- and three-wide racing every lap.

Holliday would lead 19 of the 20 laps as he came across the checkers for his second feature win in a row.

Christian finished second with Todd Robinson third, Hubie Hatfield fourth, and Dave Jamison fifth. Jamison won the dash race while Chuck Yeley and Greg Thompson won Engines Inc. heat races.

In a near carbon copy of last Friday’s feature event, David Dunn and Wayne Hughes battled side-by-side for the lead at the start of the Bomber A-Main.

Dunn led the first lap with Hughes taking the lead on lap two. Hughes never looked back as he came across the checkers for his second feature win of the season.

Dunn finished second with Wade Miller third, Joe McGinnis fourth, and Chris Maynard fifth. Dunn and Hughes won Engines Inc. heat races.

The Mod Lite A-Main was action packed from the start as Randy Armes and Chris Stone battled side by side for the lead.

The two battled for the races first eight laps until Armes took the lead on lap nine. Armes never looked back from there as he took his first career feature win.

Armes made RTR history with his win as he became the youngest driver in RTR history to win at age 14.

Stone finished second with Harold Kuhn third, Aaron Pendleton fourth and Shane Casto fifth. Armes and Stone won Engines Inc. heat races.

Rocky Top continues on this Friday with Late Models-$2,000 to win, Modifieds-$650 to win, Bombers-$350 to win, and Mod Lites-$200 to win.
