IPD officer treated after accident

IRONTON — An Ironton Police officer was treated for minor injuries he sustained Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a passing car.

Police Chief Jim Carey said Patrolman Brad Layman was called to a three-vehicle accident in the 1600 block of North Second Street at approximately 2:50 p.m. Layman remained on the scene until just before 4 p.m. when a passing car pinned him against an ambulance that had been called to treat someone injured in the three-vehicle collision. Carey said Layman was taken to an area hospital, treated and released. He returned to work the next day.

The incident is under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is standard procedure for incidents involving a city police officer.

Ironton native honored as S.C. Teacher of Year

Bryan Coburn, a computer science and pre-engineering teacher at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, S.C., recently received the honor of being named South Carolina’s Teacher of the Year.

Coburn was born in Ironton and later moved with his family to Gallipolis where his father was the minister at the Gallipolis Christian Church for more than 30 years.

He is the son of Denny and Shirley Coburn. Denny Coburn graduated from Ironton High School in 1954. Bryan Coburn graduated from Gallia Academy High School in 1979 and received his master’s in teaching from Winthrop University.

Rock Hill announces summer school plan

ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP — Summer school for all third graders will be June 8-25 at the elementary school. Classes will be 8:30 a.m.- noon Monday-Thursday.

Parents will be reimbursed $15 a day for transporting their child to and from classes.

OGT intervention will be offered at the high school at on the following dates:

Social studies: June 15-16. Classes will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The OGT test for social studies will be given at 9 a.m. June 17.

Math: June 18-19. Classes will be 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. The OGT test for math will be given at 9 a.m. June 22.

Science: June 23-24. Classes will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The OGT test for science will be given at 9 a.m. June 25.

All students wishing to take the OGT tests during summer must attend the 12-hour intervention time before taking the test.

Soil and water to host seminar

LINNVILLE — The Lawrence Soil and Water Conservation District, in cooperation with the Iron Furnace Cooperative Weed Management Area, will host a seminar on invasive plants at 8 p.m. Thursday at Symmes Valley High School.

Landowners who are interested in learning more about invasive weed eradication are encouraged to attend the workshop.

Marshall hires firm in new AD search

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marshall University has hired a Texas consulting firm to conduct a national search for a replacement for retiring athletic director Bob Marcum.

The university said Friday it will use private funds to retain the services of Eastman & Beaudine Inc. of Plano, Texas.

Marcum has said he’s retiring after seven years at Marshall when his contract expires at the end of June.

The Huntington native and 1959 Marshall graduate also served as AD at Kansas, South Carolina and Massachusetts, as well as in executive positions at motorsports tracks in Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C.

Paving under way on S.R. 217, 218

LAWRENCE COUNTY —  A resurfacing project has started on State Routes 217 and 218 in Lawrence County as contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation began paving operations site preparations and preliminary operations Friday.

Crews from the Shelly Company of Thornville, Ohio, will be resurfacing S.R. 217 between its junction with S.R. 218 and S.R. 7, as well as S.R. 218 from S.R. 217 to the Gallia County line.

The Shelly Company was awarded a contract in the amount of $824,747 to complete the resurfacing project, and throughout construction, two-way traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers as needed. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2009.

BCPL: ‘Be Creative’ movies each Friday

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is teaming up with Ashland Independent Schools to sponsor a free kids’ movie and lunch each Friday this summer.

The “Be Creative” movie series kicks off June 6, with the cartoon “Summertime with Max & Ruby.” All movies are shown at noon in the meeting room at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave.

The series theme ties in with The Library’s Summer Reading program, which is taking place throughout June and July at all three branches (Main, Catlettsburg and Summit). There are programs for all ages, from toddler through adult. More information can be found at www.thebookplace.org

Admission to the movies is free, and the Ashland Independent Schools Summer Feeding Program is providing a lunch.
