PICKERINGTON — The long run came to a unwanted stop.

The Green Lady Bobcats’ tournament run came to a halt on Saturday as they lost 6-0 to the Strasburg-Franklin Lady Tigers in the Division IV regional championship game.

“It didn’t end where they wanted it to end, but that’s the way it works out. But they’ve got a lot to be proud of. There were only eight teams left in the state. They were disappointed. It’s a good group. They’re all top-notch kids,” said Green coach Dale Royse.

“It was a good run and I was just glad to be part of it.”

Green graduates five seniors including Ali Thompson, Abbey Barrett, Ashlee Runyon, Tiffany Stoneking and Destiny Skaggs.

The Lady Tigers — who have won four state titles — advanced to the state tournament for the ninth time. Strasburg (30-2) was ranked first in the softball coaches’ poll.

“(Strasburg) is a pretty good ball club. They hit well, run the bases well and field the ball well,” said Royse.

Green was hoping to make the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Lady Bobcats settle for a regional runner-up and an impressive 18-4 season along with an unbeaten Southern Ohio Conference championship.

Strasburg scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings.

In the fifth, a bunt single, an RBI triple by Carly Clark and two-run homer by Aubrey Burnworth pushed the lead to 6-0.

Thompson, who pitched 14 innings on Thursday in a 1-0 semifinal win over Portsmouth Clay, took the loss. She allowed just five hits, struck out eight and walked two over six innings.

Strasburg pitchers Clark and Kasey Gerber combined for 11 strikeouts, one walk and two hits.

Cassidy Skaggs and Thompson each went 1-3 for Green.
