COAL GROVE — Despite nearly two inches of rain in the two days prior to raceday, the Rocky Top Raceway persevered and was able to get the track ready to race last Friday.

The track surface held up very good as it was the best it had been all season, which is very impressive considering the heavy rains.

In the 25-lap Late Model A-Main, Grayson, Kentucky’s Jackie Boggs took the lead at the start. As the race wore on, Boggs continued to extend his lead on second place runner Tim Dohm.

Boggs was untouched the entire race as he led all 25 laps to claim his third RTR feature win in a row.

Dohm finished second with Rick Combs third, Tre Martin fourth, and Carl Dillow II fifth. Boggs was also fast qualifier and won his Engines Inc. heat race.

Willow Wood’s Dave Kelley took the lead at the start of the Modified A-Main. The racing was unbelievable up front as the top five cars were all bunched up, battling two- and three-wide for the lead.

On a lap eight restart, Eddie Harmon got a tremendous run on the high side as he moved from fourth to battle side-by-side for the lead in one corner. Harmon made the pass for the lead on lap nine and never looked back as he took his first RTR feature win of the season.

Adam Jordan charged from seventh to finish second with Todd Robinson third, Dave Jamison fourth, and Chuck Yeley fifth. Harmon won the dash race while Jordan and Jamison won Engines Inc. heat races.

David Dunn took the lead at the start of the Bomber A-Main. Dunn maintained a five-car length lead all race until a caution flag flew on lap 11.

On the restart, second place runner Jeremie Bretz stayed right on the bumper of Dunn until the two reached the final lap. Into turn one on the last lap, Bretz got to the inside of Dunn as they battled side-by-side for the lead.

They remained side-by-side into turn three as now the cars had to work around two lapped cars. The two made contact, but both drivers stayed on the gas, beating and banging coming to the checkers.

Dunn would win the drag race to the finish line to take his second RTR feature win of the season. Bretz finished second with Wayne Hughes third, Chris Maynard fourth, and Sam Allen fifth.

Harold Kuhn took the lead at the start of the 15-lap Mod Lite A-Main. Kuhn led the races first two laps until fifth place starter Chris Stone stormed into the lead on lap two. Stone had a straightaway lead until a red flag flew on lap 11 for a J. C. Wurts flip. Fortunately, Wurts was okay.

On the restart, second place runner Randy Armes got right up to Stone as they battled for the lead. Going into turn three on the final lap, Armes dived low on Stone as they were side-by-side for the lead coming to the checkers.

At the line, Stone took the win by a couple of inches in the closest finish in RTR history. Armes finished second with Mark Noel third, Harold Kuhn fourth, and Wurts fifth. The 14-year-old Armes won the Engines Inc. heat race.

Racing continues at Rocky Top Raceway on Friday with a full racing program of Late Models-$1,500 to win, Modifieds-$650 to win, Bombers-$350 to win, and Mod Lites-$200 to win.

The Late Model payout has been restructured to pay more money through the field, so a very strong Late Model car count is expected this week.
