IRONTON — Those lazy, hazy days of summer are about to become more fun for some Ironton children and their families, thanks to the Ironton Women’s Cooperative Club.

Last year the club donated $2,100 to the city of Ironton Recreation Department to upgrade the Eighth Street playground. The money was used to purchase new equipment that was installed this spring.

“We bought two new grills, the new picnic table and two new baby swings,” Ironton Recreation Director Brent Thomas said.

Co op Club members got a look at the new equipment Monday when they delivered another, $700 donation to the city to be used at the same park.

“I think it’s important for the community to still have neighborhood parks for children to play in,” Co op Club member Lou Pyles said.

Mayor Rich Blankenship said he is pleased with the donations.

“We want to upgrade all our parks. Obviously we can’t do that all at one time. But with help from the Co-op Club, it enhances our ability to do it.”

Thomas said he is not sure what will be purchased with the second donation.

“We want them to buy things the kids will use and enjoy,” Co-Op Club member Emma Roach said.
