SOUTH POINT — Apparently there is no rest for the South Point educator. Just a little over week after the district’s graduation, the district’s superintendent got word that Gov. Ted Strickland is expected to make a visit to his schools on Thursday.

“The only thing we have been informed is that he’s coming at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the high school,” Superintendent Ken Cook said. “I got a call late yesterday afternoon.”

Strickland is interested in looking at the progress the district has made under the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) grant program.

“He is seeing how well the students have responded,” Cook said.

Two South Point students will make presentations on what they have learned through the program along with presentations from two of the teachers involved with the grant — Donna Nelson and Gretchen Hale.

“We will show him what we have done with career technology, getting kids involved in career selection,” Cook said.

Strickland is also expected to meet with the Dr. James Payne, Lawrence County superintendent, as well as other district superintendents and treasurers later that day.

A spokesman at Strickland’s press office could not confirm the visit.
