Child hit by vehicle, taken to hospital

IRONTON — A 10-year-old Ironton boy was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center following an accident in the city Monday.

The child was struck by a 1995 GMC Jimmy driven by Felipe Beach, 19, of Ironton, at the 600 block of South Ninth and Madison streets. Beach was going south on Ninth Street.

“The child ran out into the roadway,” said Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey, who declined to give the child’s name.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. and is still under investigation.

PROCTORVILLE — A Mixed Media Poetry Reading will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ohio University Proctorville. The event will feature area poets who will read from their works while images of art are projected on the screen. The images include painting, calligraphy, scanner collage, photography and comics. The works are by master artists and by the poets. Guests poets will be Shannon Butler, Bev Delidow, Jen Grover, Ron Houchin, John and Llewellyn McKernan, Matt Morris, Art Stringer and Matthew Wolfe. Kids under 6 can get lead testing

IRONTON — Lutheran Social Services, in conjunction with the Ironton Health Department and Molina Healthcare of Ohio, will be conducting lead poisoning tests Thursday for children six and under.

The testing is a product of Lead Poison Awareness Week which takes place from June 7th to June 11th.

“There’s a huge issue with children and lead poisoning,” said Molina spokeswoman Sunny Yu. “(This event) goes really well with the prevention week and gives an opportunity to educate about lead poisoning.”

The testing will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and will cost nothing for insured children and $20 for uninsured children. Lutheran Social Services will be providing food for the needy throughout the event.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is located at 101 S. Sixth Street.

Police catch inmate who fled work detail

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) – One of three inmates who left a state Division of Highways work detail in Beckley has been captured.

Huntington Police say they found 23-year-old Brandon Williams at a home in Guyandotte on Monday. He was captured after he tried to carjack a vehicle with a woman and her two children inside.

A Fayette County magistrate issued arrest warrants for Williams, 27-year-old Robert Cole and 28-year-old Nicholas Lane after they escaped Thursday.

The state Division of Corrections says all three were serving sentences at a minimum-security work camp at Mount Olive.

Cole was serving one to 15 years on a drug charge. Lane was serving one to 10 years for wanton endangerment and one to four years for breaking and entering. Williams was serving one to 10 years for grand larceny.
