It was postponed last week, but a Lawrence County grand jury is likely to meet later this week to consider the case of Tom Wilcox, the Ironton man accused of killing his estranged wife, according to information from the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office.

At that point new charges may be levied against Wilcox in light of Amy Wilcox’s death Friday evening.

Tom Wilcox, 38, is now charged with attempt to commit murder, aggravated burglary, arson and felonious assault. He is also scheduled to appear Thursday in Lawrence County Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing in this matter.

Authorities contend the incident was domestic in nature. Amy Wilcox had filed for divorce from her husband in October 2008, according to Lawrence County Clerk of Court records. She had custody of the couple’s two children. The kids are now in the care of her parents.

Wilcox allegedly went to his estranged wife’s Deering residence, assaulted her and then set her on fire. She was first taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., and then transported by helicopter to the hospital in Cincinnati.

Tom Wilcox was first taken by a friend to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky., and then to a hospital in Louisville, Ky.

He was discharged from that hospital only to be taken into custody June 5. He was first taken to a jail in Louisville and then brought back to Lawrence County last week. He is being held in the Scioto County Jail.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said Lawrence County taxpayers are picking up the tab not only for Wilcox’s jail stay but also his medical care

“We’ve not found an insurance that we can bill at this point,” Lawless said. However, Lawless said his medical care is being handled by two nurses at the Scioto facility and by his own staff nurse, Shawn McDaniel, who goes twice a week to Scioto County and dresses Tom Wilcox’s wounds, thus saving the county from having to pay for hospital visits.

“We’re finding ways to make this work in spite of a tight budget,” Lawless said. “We’re trying to minimalize costs wherever we can.”

Wilcox has made few comments since he was brought back to Lawrence County, Lawless said.
