DOROTHY QUARLES

Dorothy Banks Quarles, 89, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Ky. She was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Flora Johnson Banks. Dorothy was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she was also a member of the choir for 50 years. She was also a Girl Scout leader for 29 years and playground supervisor at the 9th Street Playground. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Quarles Lewis; a brother, Wendell Banks; and a sister, Mildred Lewis.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene Quarles Sr., whom she married Aug. 28, 1941; one son, Eugene (Martha) Jr. of Michigan; two brothers, Marshall (Dorothy) Banks and Maurice (Joan) Banks, both of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Erik Lewis of Mississippi, Alison Lewis of Michigan, Michele Quarles Daniels of Michigan and Hawanya Quarles of Michigan; great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. David Peoples officiating. Internment will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Tracy Brammer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
