Police seek honor for former officer

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) — Police in a northeastern Kentucky city are doing some detective work in hopes of winning recognition for a fellow officer who died decades ago.

Ashland police are asking the public for any information available about former patrol officer W.T. Johnson. The Daily Independent of Ashland says the department wants to verify that Johnson was the sixth police officer in Ashland to die in the line of duty.

According to Johnson’s obituary, he died in 1923 from an illness caused by a gunshot wound he received as a police officer years earlier.

Marshall prof to build database

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marshall University has received a $198,000 federal grant for the study of flammable liquids in relation to suspicious fires.

The National Institute of Justice awarded the grant for the two-year study being conducted by J. Graham Rankin.

Rankin plans to build a database of kerosene and petroleum distillates commonly sold as charcoal lighters, paint thinners and industrial solvents.
