She came ready to work when there was work to be done. For that, Doris Roberts has been named senior of the year at the Ironton Senior Center.

Site Manager Carol Horner said Roberts agreed to lead the center’s thrice-weekly light exercise programs after the death of the former leader, Frank Malone.

“If I’d ask her, she would do whatever I ask her to do,” Horner said. “She’s a terrific lady.”

Roberts said she wasn’t expecting any accolades for doing something she enjoys.

“I was surprised,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘what have I done (to deserve this)?’”

The half-hour programs are at 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on the second floor of the Park Avenue Apartments building. It is open to all seniors.
