Trial set for former W.Va. lawmaker

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — An August trial has been set for a former West Virginia lawmaker on federal charges of bribery, vote buying and running illegal gambling rings in West Virginia and Kentucky.

Joe Ferrell of Chapmanville pleaded not guilty Tuesday at an arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Maurice Taylor in Huntington.

His company and co-defendant, Southern Amusement Co. of Logan, also pleaded not guilty.

Southern Amusement is a video lottery machine leasing business.

A 48-count indictment handed up June 8 accused the 62-year-old Ferrell of seeking his legislative position to protect his business by influencing legislation concerning video lottery machines.

The trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 24 before U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver.

Outdoor movie night is June 26

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library’s Pictures in the Park series continues June 26, with a showing of “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.”

Pictures in the Park starts at dark – around 9 p.m. – just outside the Reading Garden at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. The Library closes at 5 p.m., so movie attendees should just come to the side of the building.

People need to bring their own chairs and blankets to the movie. Admission is free. Popcorn is provided, and people can bring their own drinks and other snacks.

“E.T: Extra-Terrestrial,” made in 1982, is about a group of children who help a stranded alien botanist get home.

It is rated PG.

The outdoor movie system includes a 12-foot inflatable screen and 100-watt speakers. All outdoor movies are either classic or family films.

They will be shown on the last Friday of each month, through October, at dark. Upcoming selections include “Superman” on July 31; “Grease” on Aug. 28; and “Back to the Future” on Sept. 25.

If it rains, the outdoor movie will take place the following Friday.

Outside groups can host movie showings inside the library, using the library’s license.
