HANGING ROCK — An early morning fire at the Duke Energy plant at Hanging Rock resulted in some heat damage to one of the buildings at the site.

A call went out just before 7 a.m. Wednesday when a transformer blew and caused a large fire at the plant, according to Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless.

Volunteer units responded from Hamilton Township, Upper Township and Coal Grove, according to a dispatcher at 911. The blaze took about an hour to contain and crews stayed on for another hour to rake through the debris to make sure no hot spots erupted.

There were no injuries or structure damage. A concrete wall that surrounded the transformer protected the one affected building from sustaining any further damage, Lawless said.
