Cow-clad customers get free Chick-fil-A

ASHLAND, Ky. — In the ‘moo’d for a free meal? As part of the chain’s fifth-annual Cow Appreciation Day celebration, the Chick-fil-A at 410 Riverhill Drive is offering a free meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) to any customer who visits fully dressed as a cow on Friday, July 10.

In celebration of Cow Appreciation Day, the chain’s popular Chick-fil-A “Eat Mor Chikin” Cows are encouraging customers to dress head to hoof as a cow.

Customers fully dressed as a cow will be rewarded with a free Chick-fil-A Meal, which includes an entrée of choice, a side item and a beverage. For those who are too timid to wear full cow costumes, the restaurant will award a complimentary entrée to customers partially dressed in cow attire, such as a cow-spotted scarf, purse, hat or other accessory.

The restaurant also will host a special Family Night on July 7 from 6 – 8 p.m. to help customers prepare for Cow Appreciation Day. The “Eat Mor Chikin” Cow will be present and children can create their own cow costumes to wear on Cow Appreciation Day.

“Cow Appreciation Day gives us a chance to interact first-hand with our most loyal and creative customers,” said Shaine Miles, franchise operator of the restaurant. “If you’re willing to dress up like a cow for a free meal, that says a lot about how much you love Chick-fil-A! While the day is intended to be a fun way to reward our customers with free food, my team and I enjoy seeing the creativity of the community at this event each year.”

SP resident gets honors at Berea

BEREA — Kayla L. Casey a resident of South Point was honored at the Scholarship Day Academic Awards Banquet on March 17 at Berea College.

This banquet is held every year to honor superior academics in addition to good character and initiative from Berea College students. This year Janet K. Gooding, a 2009 Phi Kappa Phi Scholar spoke to the recipients of scholarships and awards on the subject of “The Facets of Our Education.”

Casey is a recipient of the 2009 Carlisle Keller Macdonald Scholarship for Study Abroad. The Carlisle Keller Macdonald Scholarship for Study Abroad is awarded to students traveling abroad for the first time. A faculty committee chooses the Macdonald Scholars from among candidates with academic achievement and clearly stated plans of international study that will enrich their Berea education.

Casey was also named to the dean’s list at Berea College for the Spring Term of 2009. In order to be considered for the dean’s list, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 4 credit hour courses and must maintain an ‘A’ average in each course.

BCPL now showing kid/family flicks

SUMMIT, Ky. — That super sleuth of a Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, will help kick off a new monthly program at the Summit Branch of Boyd County Public Library on July 11.

Scooby-Doo cartoons will be shown all day long at the branch, with a screening of the gang’s most recent mystery, “Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword” at 2 p.m. Scooby will also make a personal appearance at that time.

Kids (and adults) are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite member of the gang. The winner of the costume contest will be announced just prior to the start of the 2 p.m. movie.

Scooby-Doo Day kicks off the Second Saturday Screening at Summit monthly series. Each second Saturday, a children’s/family movie will be shown at 2 p.m. The Aug. 8 feature is “Race to Witch Mountain” and the Sept. 12 showing is “Hannah Montana: The Movie.”

Admission to all movies is free, and refreshments are served.

The library recently purchased a “movie public performance copyright compliance site license” for Summit from Movie Licensing USA. The license allows for public showings of movies from most of the major studios. It also allows outside groups to host a movie showing at the library. Anyone wishing to do so should call Amanda Clark at (606) 329-0518, ext. 1140.

The main branch has had its movie license since the fall of 2005, and movies continue to be very popular events. The Library added an outdoor movie license this year, and has been showing one film a month outside the Main Branch. At least 100 people attend each month.

SOLO to celebrate 25th anniversary

PORTSMOUTH — The Southern Ohio Light Opera (SOLO) will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore.”

This special production features a talented cast of SOLO favorites including Jonathan Burton, Emma Hunter, Misty Imes, and Dr. Vincent Scarpinato.

This one-night-only performance will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009 in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts on the Campus of Shawnee State University.

Workers threaten daily pickets

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Public employees in West Virginia’s second-largest city are planning daily pickets in front of City Hall to demand new contract negotiations.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 598 represents about 100 of Huntington’s 360 workers. They’ve been without a contract since July 2008.

Mayor Kim Wolfe responded in a letter to the union and to police and fire unions that he hasn’t determined yet whether new contracts are in the city’s best interest.

Workers picketed Wednesday in front of City Hall. Danny Plybon, a past president of the local, says they plan to picket every day.
