Ashland, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is now giving patrons a choice when it comes to their library card. There are seven new designs to choose from, including one with the library’s new logo.

“The most special thing about these new cards is there is one just for kids that says ‘My First Library Card,’” said Gina Bartram, circulation specialist.

Throughout July, patrons can get a new card for free. The regular fee of $2 starts again on Aug. 1. Also, instead of simply signing the back of the new card, patrons now must have their picture taken as a way to show responsibility for the card’s use.

Current cards still work to check out materials and use the library’s reference, genealogy and other services. Some people are choosing to keep their old cards, said Adam Chandler, circulation specialist, but many have wasted no time getting new ones. In the first two days more than 60 cards were issued, Bartram said.

The new cards come in a pack of two — one wallet-size and one to attach to a key ring. Both incorporate the chosen design.

It has been about three years since the library switched its cards. This is the fifth card set at Boyd County Public Library since 1989.
