Shakespeare in the Park set for July 9

ASHLAND, Ky. — A free public performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” performed by actors with the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, will be Thursday, July 9, in Central Park.

The event, sponsored by Boyd County Public Library, starts at 6 p.m. at the park’s gazebo, not far from the Main Branch on Central Avenue.

Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, which performs regularly in Louisville, is the oldest free, independently-operating Shakespeare Festival in the country.

The mission of the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival is to “enrich our community through accessible, professional theatre experiences that educate, inspire and entertain.” The July 9 performance includes “magic, buffoonery and blossoming romances” and will draw children into the story with music, puppetry and opportunities to participate.

The group’s work ties in perfectly with “Be Creative,” Boyd County Public Library’s 2009 summer reading program, going on now through the end of July, which is why the library wanted to sponsor the Shakespeare event, said Misti Tidman, supervisor of youth services.

The actors will also be doing a special workshop just for teens at the main branch on Wednesday, July 8, at 4 p.m.

There is still plenty of time to get involved with “Be Creative,” Tidman said. There are weekly programs featuring stories, crafts and other activities at all three branches, for toddlers through teens. By keeping track of the number of hours spent reading, youth can earn rewards and be eligible for prizes.

OLBH offer free glaucoma tests

ASHLAND, Ky. — Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s (OLBH) Healthy Community Services program will offer free glaucoma screenings at the Ashland Town Center Wednesday, July 8 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

In addition to the glaucoma screenings, representatives of the OLBH Women’s Center will provide information concerning women’s health, the center’s services and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

St. Paul Lutheran to have day camp

IRONTON — St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironton will have an Amazing Grace Day Camp 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. July 6-10.

The day camp will include crafts, music, Bible study, games and sports. The church is located at 101 S. Sixth St.

Ag group to host community forum

AID TOWNSHIP — The Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation will host a series of informational meetings to announce its 2009-2010 programs.

The meetings are aimed in particular at those producers who have obtained grants from the foundation as there have been significant changes in the program.

Applications and informational packets are now available at the foundation office in Hillsboro, the local Farm Services Agencies, at the county extension offices and at the Lawrence Soil and Water Conservation District in Linnville. This material is also available online at www.soacdf.net.

The schedule includes meetings at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 at Symmes Valley High School on State Route 141 in Aid, 6:30 p.m. July 9 at the C.H McKenzie Ag Center on Jackson Pike in Gallipolis and at 6:30 p.m. July 16 at the USDA Service Center, State Route 104 in Lucasville.

McKell graduate earns scholarship

PORTSMOUTH — The Shawnee State University Scholarship Committee awarded the 2009-10 Edward J. Daehler Memorial Scholarship in Legal Assisting of $700 to Mary Moore.

Applicants must be a legal assisting student entering his or her second year of the two-year program or the fourth year of the four-year program with a minimum of 2.5 GPA. They must also demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA.

Moore, of Friendship, is a 1969 graduate of McKell High School in Greenup County, Ky. She is a returning SSU student who plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree in legal assisting at SSU.

The funds of this scholarship are administered by the SSU Development Foundation.
