CHESAPEAKE — It’s all a part of being of service to the community. That was the motivation for Daniel Hughes to spend last weekend fixing up the Chesapeake boat ramp.

Hughes and some fellow Scouts from Troop 115 camped out at the boat ramp this past Friday and Saturday spending the time replacing the rotten posts and painting them as well as picking up trash.

The project will allow Hughes, 15, to earn his Eagle Scout rank, the highest in Scouting.

“That is something I have wanted for a while,” Hughes said. “We had been going to Symmes Creek for the annual boat dock cleanup and I noticed the posts were in bad condition.”

The new posts and cans of paint were donated by the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste District.

Hughes, who will be a sophomore at South Point High this fall, got into scouting about five years ago. In that time he has earned all the badges to be a Life Scout. When there is a board review of the cleanup project, he will then earn the Eagle designation.

“I like the outdoors, camping and hiking,” he said.

The Scouts were out on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus an hour Friday working on the project.

“We replaced the ones that were rotted to the ground,” Hughes said. “We did this so it would stop vehicles to get into the grass and help wildlife and any children who happen to be playing in the area.”
