The Ironton High School Color Guard will take to the court July 7 to 9 in its first-ever dance camp.

The camp takes place in the IHS Conley Center and costs $25 to participate. It will cover a variety of dance genres including jazz, hip hop, flagging and baton twirling.

The IHS guard will be teaching many of these dance routines. They have spent the last few weeks preparing routines to teach to the children and some said they are excited about the experience.

“We have a couple practices to warm ourselves up and get us back to the basics so we don’t teach them the wrong thing,” said Stephanie Diamond, co-captain and senior at IHS.

The money for the event is being used to help sponsor the guard’s trip to New York that will happen later in the school year. This, however, is not their only inspiration.

“Hopefully, it will inspire the girls to try out for majorettes or flags or cheerleading,” director Valerie Freeman said. “It’s not only an activity to raise money but an opportunity to give back to the community.”

Captain and senior Amber Bazell is looking forward to simply teaching a group of younger children new things.

“They kinda get a little hint of what they do when they’re older,” she said.
