Carpenter to display memorabilia Aug. 4

ASHLAND, Ky. — Football season means fans tailgating before games. The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center has its own tailgate party planned.

The Highlands Museum announced that the Tailgating Preview Party for John Carpenter’s Hall of Champions will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Carpenter, who owns the world’s largest personal sports memorabilia collection, has thousands of items in all sports from 1880 until today.

The items on display are for all ages and provide an educational purpose as well. Among the many items will be the 1927 football kicked by the legendary Jim Thorpe, a Green Bay Packers’ helmet autographed by Brett Favre and a football autographed by O.J. Simpson.

More than 130 items will be on display from such sports personalities as Archie Griffin, Joe Paterno, John Gagliardi, Bob Jackson, Jason White and Eddie Robinson.

Admission to the tailgate preview party is $10 per person and includes foods from Mary’s Kitchen Catering and entertainment by the Greenup County High School cheerleaders and pep band.

Also expected to attend are area football coaches and players.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the museum’s educational programming.

The museum is located at 1620 Winchester Avenue, Ashland. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
