IRONTON — Strong thunderstorms pounded Lawrence County Saturday afternoon brining heavy rains, strong winds, quarter-inch sized hail and flash flooding.

The storms also brought lightning that reportedly struck three people in Elizabeth Township.

At 6 p.m., rescue officials responded to a 911 call that lightning may have injured three people. The emergency call said the strike took place at 335 Township Road 323 south of Pedro.

Two of the victims were transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital where one was reported to be unconscious. No other details were being released at press time.

According to the National Weather Service, rain was falling at a rate of nearly an inch an hour with 1.71 inches of rain being reported near the Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Proctorville.

Quarter-inch sized hail was also reported in parts of Ironton where flash flooding played havoc with homeowners on the city’s north side. In some sections, water levels were knee high.

Tim Collins, 418 Karin St., said Saturday’s flooding was the worst he has seen in years on his street that parallels U.S. 52.

“The water moved upside the house right next to my hedges,” Collins said. “It the most water I’ve seen on this street in a long time.”

High winds were responsible for downed trees in Ironton and along State Routes 93 and 141 and County Roads 5 and 29.

The storms resulted in a pair of possible tornadoes being reported by law enforcement officials in nearby counties.

A tornado might have destroyed mobile homes and downed trees in Pike County near the village of Buchanan with another possibly spotted 10 miles southwest of Chillicothe in Ross County.
