PROCTORVILLE — It was a community effort to help the children of that community, bringing together commercial businesses, private citizens and government officials.

It’s all turned into a revitalized Wilgus Street Park in the village designed to provide recreational outlets for the village’s children.

Councilman Davy Peters, who joined village government last fall, spearheaded the improvement project calling on Lowe’s, where he works, and its Lowe’s Heroes Program, where the home improvement adopts a community project to help.

Lowe’s donated $1,200 toward an $1,800 playset with the remainder coming from grants. The set is made up of two jungle gyms, one with monkey bars. Another in the community added finishing touches. Aero Fab in Huntington, W.Va., made new handles for the slides already at the park.

“Those guys took their time and made us two new handles,” Peters said.

Valspar donated paint and the Kroger’s in Proctorville donated drinks for the volunteers who worked on the park.

“There wasn’t anything there before than swing sets and an old caterpillar toy to climb on,” Peters said.

“No one took any pride in this. I wanted to get something to fix this park up. There have been so many kids over there. It’s something to play on. It is rewarding to see.”
