School for autistic to host open house

PORTSMOUTH — Educational services for children on the autism spectrum can be difficult to find, but there is a school that specializes in teaching children with autism in Portsmouth.

Haugland Learning Center first began in Columbus under the direction of Dr. Morten Haugland in 2005. Dr. Haugland has over 17 years of experience working with special needs children.

In addition to earning his doctorate in Special Education, Haugland is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This designation means he is an expert in Applied Behavior Analysis, the only scientifically proven method of successful treatment of autism.

Haugland opened a branch in the Portsmouth area last year that served almost a dozen students.

All costs for the educational services are covered by the Autism Scholarship Program through the Ohio Department of Education.

Overseen by lead teacher Jessica Hammonds, the school operates with a 1:4 teacher/student ratio.

Haugland and Hammonds will host an open house for all interested parents and professionals who would like to see the school and meet the staff.

Parents of current students will also be present.

The event is scheduled for Monday, July 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the school, 1018 Waller St., Portsmouth 45662.

Tri-State Airport says boardings up

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Boardings at Tri-State Airport are up by 36.6 percent for the first six months of the year.

Figures presented Thursday to the airport’s authority show boardings increased from 68,508 to 93,623, compared to the same six-month period in 2008.

Boardings in June totaled 10,149, an 18.6 percent increase from June 2008.

Allegiant Airlines saw an 82 percent increase in enplanements for the first six months of the year. Enplanements totaled 32,966, compared to 18,127 during the same six-month period in 2008.

Campground to host flea market

SCIOTOVILLE — Do you want to have a yard sale? Want to go camping? If so, why not do both, as Wolford’s Landing will be hosting a flea market/yard sale on Saturday, August 1, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Campground, which is located at 6888 E. Front Street in Sciotoville, Ohio.

This particular event is to encourage folks to visit the campgrounds, as well as have a great time peddling their wares.

However, to sell items participants must have a registered campsite, as the sale of items can only be displayed within the confines of the rented campsite. Crafters are encouraged to participate, too.

Also, only personal property items may be sold (not items purchased at the event for resale).

The campground reserves the right to restrict items such as motor vehicles, knives, vehicle parts, firearms, swords, alcohol, fireworks, food, beverages, and or other items determined inappropriate by the campgrounds.

The event is open to the public.

Play auditions for ‘Harvey’ this week

WESTWOOD, Ky. — Auditions for Red Lion’s “Harvey” are right around the corner.

They are set for Monday and Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Fairview High School.

Anyone can audition, as they are open to all ages.

“Harvey” tells the story of Elwood Dowd, whose best friend is Harvey, an invisible six-foot tall rabbit. Elwood’s sister, Veta, tries desperately to have him committed to a sanitarium, yet in the process, is committed herself.

Once the doctors realize their mistake, the search is on for Dowd and his companion. However, once he is found, it is realized that Harvey has had an impact on all who have been around him.

Harvey looks at the chasm that separates fact from reality and examines which is worse: the lovable dreamer whose head is in the clouds or the people who try to have him conform to their views of society?

The show goes up Aug. 27-29, with performances at 8:30, nightly, and is tentatively set to be at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park Amphitheatre.
