IRONTON — Boomer’s, the Third Street bar that opened just two months ago, has voluntarily closed its doors following back-to-back weekend disturbances that required police intervention.

Owner Mary Gilmore said last weekend’s fracas solidified her decision to close the bar temporarily and take it a new direction. After some reorganization and remodeling, Boomer’s will reopen as a barbeque restaurant.

“I didn’t want to be responsible for someone getting seriously hurt or killed,” Gilmore said when explaining her decision in avoiding any additional conflict.

Gilmore closed the bar on her own Wednesday.

Boomer’s, which seconds as a “museum” for the blasting and explosives industry, opened on May 26. It is co-owned by Gilmore’s husband Larry who has worked in the commercial blasting industry for more than 30 years.

Geared towards families and music fans with its twice-weekly helpings of karaoke and live bands, Boomer’s instead turned into a hive, especially after midnight on the weekends, for power drinkers with something to prove and troublemakers.

With more than 26 years in the business, Gilmore decided to put her foot down and nip the problem right away.

“It’s disappointing. We really had hopes for the bar. But effective with the closing, we will have no more late hours, no more bands and no more karaoke,” Gilmore said.

When Boomer’s reopens, Gilmore said its hours will be from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and will be closed Sunday and Monday. It will still offer alcohol, albeit served in a restaurant environment.

Gilmore said a new menu is in the planning stages. She hopes for an August reopening.
