ASHTABULA — A supermarket food sample display didn’t give away as much as the Ironton Senior League All-Stars.

Hayden Mobley of Berlin Hiland hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the error-prone Ironton Senior League 12-10 Tuesday in the championship game of the winner’s bracket.

“As well as we’ve played the last two games, today was the worst we’ve played,” said Ironton manager Chuck Price.

“We made mistakes and they took advantage of those mistakes and we just beat us. We showed a lot of heart coming back, but we put ourselves in that position.”

Defense was Ironton’s biggest downfall. Six errors led to nine unearned runs.

The lack of defense put Ironton in a precarious position that did not afford them any margin for error after falling behind 10-2 after four innings.

Jonathan Williams came on to pitch three strong innings before becoming the victim of Mobley’s home run.

“Jonathan Williams came in and shut them down. He kept us in the game and he made only one bad pitch the whole game,” said Price.

“(Williams) had the guy set up for the pitch he threw but he hung it a little bit and the guy was their best hitter.”

Ironton jumped out to a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first inning. Jake Murphy, Wayne Sparks and Tanner Riley all singled to give Ironton a 1-0 lead.

Hiland got a run in the second and two more in the third to lead 3-1.

Ironton got a run back in the top of the fourth to draw within 3-2 when Sparks doubled and Tommy Waginger had a two-out single.

Ironton made three straight errors in the fourth inning followed by five hits in a row when Hiland scored seven runs.

But Ironton didn’t quit. The local stars scored eight times to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

Jared Eldrdge walked, Esque and Williams singled and Murphy walked to force in a run.

An error allowed a run to score and Waginger had an RBI single. T.J. Young walked and Eldridge was safe on an error as two more runs scored. Dickess then doubled home two runs to tie the game.

In the bottom of the inning Hiland got a base hit with one out. After a popup, Mobley hit a 1-2 pitch for a two-run, game-winning home run.

Waginger and Sparks were 2-4 and Williams 2-5 to lead Ironton’s 11-hit attack.

Ironton will now try to play its way back into the championship at 5:30 on Wednesday in the title game of the loser’s bracket against Miami. The winner must then beat Hiland twice to win the state championship.
