Rally moves Farmers Market this weekend

IRONTON — The Lawrence County Farmer’s Market will relocate its produce stands on Saturday, Aug. 15 to the Social Security Administration offices parking lot due to their current space being needed for this weekend’s Rally on the River.

The Social Security Administration office is located at 405 S. Third St.

The Lawrence County Farmers Market runs every Saturday in the summer from 7 a.m. until vendors run out of product.

Plenty of parking surrounds the building.

The change only affects the August 15 sale. The farmers market will return to its traditional Second and Depot streets home on Aug. 22.

Steer back where it belongs

GETAWAY — The sightseeing steer that caused some commotion on Thursday and Friday in the village of Chesapeake was reunited this weekend with its rightful owner.

Early Friday morning around 1:30 a.m. a Holstein steer was finally corralled down in a ravine off Symmes Creek in Chesapeake.

Passers-by had sighted the animal hours earlier at the Chesapeake Bypass before rescuers got it off the Robert C. Byrd Bridge to relative safety.

By Friday afternoon Ed and Bill Pratt from Pratt’s Dairy Farm at Getaway rescued the animal and took it to their farm for safekeeping.

On Sunday, the owner, a South Point-based cattle trader, claimed the 6-month-old steer.

“He bought it at Gallipolis at a sale and had a sales ticket to prove it,” Ed Pratt said.

The trader was coming home with several calves and one had gotten caught in the bottom rail of the trailer.

The owner pulled off U.S. 52 to free the calf and the wayward steer jumped ship.

While it meant some odd hours for the rescuers, all work, including the temporary boarding at Pratt’s, was volunteered to the village, Mayor Dick Gilpin said.

Paramount looking for volunteers

ASHLAND, Ky. — Do you think you look cool in a vest? Do you know the alphabet, can count to 14 and aren’t afraid of the dark?

It’s our volunteer bash on Aug. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Paramount Arts Center.

We are looking for volunteers who want to help out with events and shows for our upcoming season.
