PEDRO — Can you rope? Can you ride? Well, you just might win a prize.

This weekend, the Elkins Creek Horse Camp And Tack Shop will have its first-ever Cowboy Challenge and Trail Riding event. Owner-operator Rick McCleese said cowpokes — or maybe those who just love the cowboy way of life — can test their skills at a variety of horse events.

“Open gates, over bridges, go through water… we have three water holes to go through, stuff horses wouldn’t normally do,” McCleese said. “I hope to have two or three a year.”

There is no age limit for the event, meaning even younger riders have a chance at winning a prize. McCleese said he hopes to have 40-50 participants.

There is a $10 entry fee with 100 percent of the entry fees paid back in prize money to the top three finalists.

Events begin Friday evening with a trail ride and campfire. The competition begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, breaks at noon for lunch and resumes at 1 p.m.

A second trial ride is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday followed by a potluck dinner. Participants are asked to bring a dish. The competition concludes at 10 a.m. Sunday followed by a 1:30 p.m. trail ride.

Camping sites are available. The horse camp and tack shop is located on Township Road 245E in Pedro approximately 15 miles from Ironton.
