Aim for safety postponed

ASHLAND, Ky. — The Aim for Safety course at Boyd County Public Library scheduled for this week (Aug. 18, 20 and 22) has been postponed, due to a scheduling conflict with the shooting range.

The course, which teaches hunting safety, will be rescheduled at the earliest possible time. Those who have already registered will be notified of the new dates.

Pageant accepting scholarships

PORTSMOUTH — Applications are now being accepted for this year’s Miss Portsmouth and Miss Scioto Valley Scholarship Programs (ages 17-24) as well as the Miss Portsmouth Outstanding Teen and Miss Scioto Valley Outstanding Teen Programs (ages 13-17 and not a senior in high school).

The pageant theme this year is “She’s A Lady,” while using the colors of hot pink and black.

This year’s pageant will be held on Saturday Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts on the campus of Shawnee State University. All winners will be representing the Portsmouth area next June in Mansfield at the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program.

‘Girls’ Night Out’ set for Aug. 26

ASHLAND, Ky. — The monthly Girls Night Out program at Boyd County Public Library features the movie “Duplicity.”

The Aug.26 program starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. Entry to Girls Night Out is a food dish to share, or $2. All funds collected go to purchase refreshments for the program.

The movie, rated PG-13, stars Julia Roberts and Clive Owen as a pair of corporate spies who team up to pull the ultimate con job on their respective bosses.

Men are welcome to attend, but the Girls Night Out program is not intended for children. The September GNO selection is “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail.”

Rescue group plans event to help pets

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. —Little Victories Animal Rescue Group is sponsoring a pancake breakfast fundraiser to help out the deserted pets they have taken in. On Saturday, Aug. 22, there will be an all-you-can eat pancakes and sausage breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at Frankie D’s Italian Chophouse at Pullman Square. The money will go toward the group’s medical fund, which covers the cost of treatment and surgeries for the animals.

Old toys topic of library show

PROCTORVILLE — The memories of childhood are the focus of a special program at the Proctorville branch of Briggs Library Wednesday, Aug. 26.

“We would like people to bring in their old toys and games and tell the history of them,” Christine Hunt, adult services librarian, said. “It will be a program where they will reminisce.”

Hunt got her inspiration after a visit at the Jesse Stuart Foundation in Ashland, Ky, where she saw a book on Appalachian toys and games.

“If their grandchildren are not in school and want to share this stuff with them, they can bring them,” Hunt said.

Participants are cautioned not to bring anything valuable to the session, which will start at 2 p.m. The same program will be at the Ironton branch of the Briggs Library on Thursday, Aug. 27, also at 2 p.m.
