It might be August, but ’tis the season for giving.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers are taking the Ohio High School Athletic Association service week seriously. The Lady Tigers plan to give to a special charity and they are asking the community to do so as well.

Ironton will host Portsmouth in a Foundation Game Saturday in the new middle school gym. Proceeds from the game will go toward the non-profit domestic violence shelter.

“The girls really wanted to do something special and they thought this was a great organization to support,” said Ironton coach Beth Campbell.

The team will have a bake sale at the school on Friday and they are collecting clothing, hygiene items and baby items to help support the shelter.

People attending the game on Saturday may also bring donated items. A split the pot will be held with proceeds going toward the shelter. Members of the Portsmouth team are also planning to collect items to be donated.

The OHSAA service week is a promotion to get students involved in helping give back to the community. Students may use the community service on college applications.

Ironton players will wear purple T-shirts, the color designate to signify domestic violence.

The junior varsity game will be at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity match.
