PINE GROVE — Maybe Garfield doesn’t like Mondays, but the Ironton Fighting Tigers’ golf team seems quite happy with the first work day of the week.

Ironton posted a 160 team score to win the tri-match Monday at the Ironton Country Club. South Point had a 179 and Fairland finished at 189.

The win came on the heels of Ironton’s impressive third place finish in Saturday’s Huntington Invitational. Coach Jeff Kerns said he was pleased with his team’s progress.

“I was very pleased with our effort over the weekend with the (five-man) format. We lost to the back-to-back West Virginia state tournament champions in Class 3-A, so that was impressive. We played well and we’re continuing to get better,” said Kerns.

“Today we worked on some different things and I was happy with our performance.”

The Fighting Tigers’ Andy Holtzapfel took medalist honors with the day’s low round of 38 on the Par 35 course.

Josh Cooke was next for Ironton with a 40 while Josh Zornes, Jonathan Williams and Mason Weisgarber each carded a 41 while Josh Mullins shot a 46.

South Point was led by Wyatt Hall with a 41. Zac Taylor shot a 44, Wes Hall 45 and Callie Taylor carded a 49. Heath Gregory added a 55 and Hurst a 64.

For Fairland, Dalton Froelich shot a 4 and Jared Boster a 44 while Ryan Wooten had a 49 and Alex Earl a 55 for the team’s total score. Holler had a 59 and McCoy 65 for the other Fairland scores.

Ironton plays in a match at Portsmouth Clay on Wednesday before playing at the Portsmouth Tournament on Thursday at the Elks Country club.
