Picnic to mark Labor Day

CHESAPEAKE — The Village of Chesapeake will celebrate Labor Day with a community picnic from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7 at the village park. The village has hosted the picnic for the past seven years. There will be a cookout of hamburgers, hotdogs and pop. Entertainment will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“It is just a gathering for people to come and see their neighbors before winter hits and everybody is inside for awhile,” Mayor Dick Gilpin said.

Octoberfest plans come together

CHESAPEAKE — Applications are being taken for booths at the Octoberfest at the Village of Chesapeake on Saturday, Oct. 10, at triangle park. Deadline for getting the applications in is Friday, Oct. 9.

The event will start out with a 5-K run starting at 8 a.m. Octoberfest runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For applications or more information for both Octoberfest and the run contact Mayor Dick Gilpin at 867-3131.

Burlington group schedules meeting

BURLINGTON — The Concerned Citizens of Burlington will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at the Sybene Senior Center.

They will discuss the upcoming cleanup, Meet the Candidates night and the dedication of the memorial at the park.

Candidates certified for Green Township

FRANKLIN FURNACE — The Scioto County Board of Elections on Wednesday certified the petitions of five candidates running for two Green Township Trustee seats and eight candidates for three soon-to-be-vacant seats and one unexpired term on the Green Local Schools Board of Education.

The race for the two Green Township Trustee seats has a pair of long time incumbents trying to hold back three eager challengers.

Seeking re-election for an additional four-year term are Noah Waddell, Jr. and Steve Ruggles. Looking to unseat them in the non-partisan race are three challengers: Jim Gallion, Jeff Gullett and Lloyd “Sausage” Moore.

In the Green School Board race, seven challengers step to the line to run for three open seats available. The large turnout comes as all three school board incumbents elected not to seek re-election for another four years.

The seven throwing their hat into the ring are: Sandra Cherry, Thomas Davis, David Knapp, Tanner Salyers, Loretta Dixon, Stacy McCallister and James Skeens.

Current board member Roger Collett was the lone candidate to complete the unexpired term of Steve Willard who resigned in March. Collett was appointed to the board in April to fill out the term until the end of 2009.

Fashion Show at the Paramount
