Sheriff’s deputies have made an arrest in connection with a carry-out hold up earlier this month.

Meanwhile, a man who allegedly tried to nab wallets at another area business Thursday found himself nabbed by the long arm of the law.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said Daniel Stapleton, 30, of 582 Township Road 343, Ironton, was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated robbery in connection with an Aug. 11 incident at the Pine Tree Carry-out on State Route 93 in Pedro.

A cashier working at the store told authorities a man with a red and white mask around his eyes came into the store, demanded money, shoved her and put a gun to her face.

According to a sheriff’s office report, the cashier told deputies, “the suspect shoved her back against the wall, pulled the power cord to the cash register, grabbed the register and fled out of the door.”

A witness identified Stapleton as the suspect.

Authorities found the cash register in a pond in Wheelersburg and the truck he allegedly drove to the store at a residence in Franklin Furnace. But police were at first unable to locate Stapleton. He was later arrested at a residence on State Route 141 near Ironton and taken to the Lawrence County Jail.

Also Thursday, authorities arrested an Ironton man after he allegedly took two wallets from employees at Skeetos Pizza on State Route 141 in Upper Township.

Emory S. “Scotty” Burke, 28, of 104 Scott Ave., Ironton, was charged with theft and resisting arrest and taken to jail.

According to a sheriff’s office report, employees said Burke asked to use a telephone at the restaurant and was directed to a phone in the stockroom where two employees had left their handbags. Burke allegedly grabbed the employees’ wallets and fled out of the store but was pursued by Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Officer Dean Palmer, who was a patron at the restaurant when the alleged incident occurred.

Deputy Jason Guy, who was traveling on County Road 7C, saw Burke running and joined the chase. Burke was apprehended in a wooded area not far from the store.

According to the report, Burke admitted to the thefts and said he has a “pill problem” and had not had a pill all day.
