JOHN CHILDERS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — John D. Childers, 65, of Albuquerque, N.M., died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009.
He was born in Negley, Ohio, and lived in Pedro, Ohio, for many years prior to moving to New Mexico in 1984. He was a graduate of Coal Grove High School.
At the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Air Force after which he became a professional land surveyor. He worked with the USDA Forest Service for 27 years, and then for the New Mexico Department of Transportation until his death. John loved playing bluegrass music, car racing, softball, fishing and being the photographer for the Activities Department at Rio Rancho Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Preceding him in death was his parents, Paul and Jessie Childers.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa; children, John Kevin and wife Amy, Pamela Childers, Jessica Gomez and husband Mark, Sherry Dreher and husband Mark, Sandy Boon and husband, Fred; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Mae Fern Boggs and June (Poochie) Bruce; brothers, Paul Vern Childers and Larry Gene Childers. Also surviving is his ex-wife, Beverly Merrick.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at French Mortuary Westside Chapel with his, brother-in-law Lester Merrick officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 7001 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 8710.
