PINE GROVE — As bad as it was on Monday, it was that good on Wednesday.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ golf team bounced back from their worse outing of the season with a seven-shot win over the Greenup County (Ky.)Musketeers at the Ironton Country Club.

Ironton shot a 154 team score with Greenup posting a 161 team score. Ironton’s second team had a 192 and the South Point Pointers shot a 193.

“For the most part, we got back on track,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns. “We didn’t hit the ball that well, but we putted well as a team. We played better tonight.”

The match featured tri-medalists for the second time this season. Last week Ironton had three players share medalist honors. This time Ironton’s Andy Holtzapfel and Mason Weisgarber each shot a 38 for the low round on the par 35 course.

It was Weisgarber’s first career medalist honor.

Also shooting a 38 was Greenup County’s Eli Carr.

“We had five golfers shoot 40 and under. We had very consistent scoring,” said Kerns. “Depth was the issue tonight and we were deeper than Greenup.

“Andy played pretty decent golf and Josh Mullins played pretty good all week. Mason has been consistent all year. It was nice to see him get is first medalist honor.”

Besides Weisgarber and Holtzapfel, Jonathan Williams and Josh Zornes were one shot back at 39 and Josh Mullins shot a 40. Josh Cooke carded a 44.

Carr was joined by Nick Benner with a 39, Cody Walker and Kadin Ashley each fired a 42, and Travis Tussey shot a 46.

Ironton’s second team was led by Andrew Hicks with a 43 and Josh Murphy who had a 46. Michael Carter was next at 51 and Brandon Barker had a 52.

South Point was led by Wes Hall with a 44 and Wyatt Hall at 46. Callie Taylor had a 49, Josh Suttles 52 and Zac Taylor 54.

Ironton hosts Russell, Ky., on Wednesday.
