IRONTON — The Applied Science in Health Technology program at Ohio University Southern is offering a certificate in Occupational Health and Safety at the Ironton campus beginning Sept. 8.

The certificate requires students to take 20-22 hours in courses specific to occupational health and safety. Courses include:

EH260 – Environmental Safety (4 credit hrs.)

EH275 – Occupational Health (4 credit hrs.)

IH200 – Industrial Hygiene (4 credit hrs.)

HLTH119- Bioterrorism (4 credit hrs.)

HLTH217 – Intro to Health Care (4 credit hrs.)

HLTH300 – Worksite Health (2 credit hrs. tentative, pending approval)

Upon completion of the Occupational Health and Safety Track, the student will be eligible to sit for the national board exam for Health and Safety Technician.

According to the occupational outlook handbook (http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos017.htm), the responsibilities of the occupational health and safety technicians can include testing air, water, machines, and other elements of the work environment.

Technicians are responsible for the collection and analysis of data and typically work under the supervision of specialists to implement and evaluate safety programs.

Safety technicians work in a variety of settings such as offices, health care, factories, and mines.

Their jobs often involve considerable fieldwork, and some require frequent travel. Average pay for technician is $20-22/hr.
