Dragons outscore Marauders

PROCTORVILLE — Turnabout is fair play.

After taking a 14-0 halftime lead last week only to lose 15-14 in the closing minutes, the Dragons rallied with 15 points in the fourth quarter on Friday to beat the Meigs Marauders 34-27.

Fairland not only evened its record at 1-1, but gave first-year head coach Dave Carroll his first career victory.

“I’m happy and overjoyed. The team played well,” said Carroll. “We got behind and the kids stepped it up in the fourth quarter. They did what they had to do to win.

“It’s kind of a relief to get a win under our belts. The coaches worked on a good game plan and we stuck with it.”

Big plays were the key for the Dragons led by quarterback Chad Fisher and running back Matt Bloomfield.

Fisher was 8-of-18 passing for 251yards and four touchdowns. Bloomfield caught three passes for 140 yards and three scores.

“We have four guys if we get them the ball they can bust it at any time. It just so happened we had the guys make big plays tonight,” said Carroll.

Fairland scored first on a 62-yard pass to Kyle Taubenheim. Matt Campbell kicked the conversion.

Meigs came back to score on a 71-yard pass from Jacob Well to Jeremy Smith.

Bloomfield then caught a 22-yard scoring pass and ran 3 yards for a score and it was 19-6.

But the Marauders came back to take a 21-19 lead on a 15-yard pass to Smith and a 20-yard strike to Cameron Bolin.

Smith ran 26 times for 163 yards and caught two passes for 87 yards.

“Our biggest thing coming in was to limit the Smith kid. He was dangerous any time he touched the ball. Cameron Bolin is a nice receiver. We just wanted to keep them in front of us as much as we could defensively. Their quarterback has a cannon arm,” said Carroll.

Bolin had a 49-yad TD in the third quarter to make it 27-19.

But Fisher and Bloomfield hooked up on a 71-yard pass play as Bloomfield broke at least five tackles en route to the end zone.

Fisher then picked off a pass and connected with Bloomfield on the next play for 47 yards and the winning touchdown with 5:07 to play.

“That (interception) took the wind out of their sails. He knew where they were going to throw it and he stepped into the lane,” said Carroll.
