WHEELERSBURG — After struggling in week one, the Wheelersburg Pirates found their stride in week two en route to a 49-0 win over the South Point Pointers. The Pirates used a strong running game totaling 302 yards on 46 carries.

After both teams traded punts to open the game, Wheelersburg running back Brandon Schankweiler got the Pirates on the board with a 69-yard touchdown run. Caleb Leach added the extra point, and the score was 7-0 with 6:31 to go in the first.

After another South Point punt, Julian Silvey capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive with a 13-yard score. Leach added the extra point, and the lead was 14-0 with 30 seconds to go.

South Point (0-2) opened the second quarter moving the ball to the Wheelersburg 30, but two consecutive sacks by Pirates’ defensive end Nick Kemper gave the ball back to Wheelersburg on downs.

The Pirates looked to add to the lead, but a fumble at the South Point one-yard line gave the ball back to the Pointers.

Following a South Point punt, Wheelersburg started their next drive in South Point territory. After converting on fourth down, the Pirates had first down at the Pointers’ 27.

However, a bad shotgun snap resulted in a loss of 20 yards, and the Pirates faced a second down and 30. After a 12-yard pickup by quarterback Tyler Lang on second down, Schankweiler lined up at quarterback and found Andy Stegman for a 35-yard touchdown and the lead was 21-0 with 3:24 to go in the half.

Schankweiler finished the game with 120 yards on eight carriers with a touchdown, and he was also one of one passing for 35 yards with a score.

“We worked all week on responding to a tough loss last week to a good football team,” Wheelersburg head coach Rob Woodard said. “We just came back this week and worked on the fundamentals, and our offensive line did a really good job tonight opening the holes for our backs.”

After a South Point punt, Lang connected with Stegman for his second touchdown of the quarter from 34 yards out. Leach added the extra point, and the lead was 28-0 with 1:35 remaining in the half.

Wheelersburg (1-1) recovered an onside kick and in four plays, Lang ran in from 9 yards out to set the halftime score at 35-0.

The Pirates defense held the South Point offense to just 96 total yards for the game.

“Wheelersburg did a great job executing tonight,” South Point coach Doug Shilot said. “Their kids are very athletic, and there were times we missed some tackles but you have to tip your hat to Wheelersburg and their staff.”

Brandon Hedrick had 73 yards on five carries to lead the Pointers.
