CHESAPEAKE — After watching the opening drive stall at the 2-yard line, Chesapeake Panthers’ coach Phil Davis could only shake his head.

“We can’t catch a break,” said Davis.

After the Panthers failed to score, the Wayne Pioneers went 92 yards in 19 plays and scored on a 2-yard run by Corey Damron to take an 8-0 lead.

“We had them stopped several times in the backfield, but we didn’t hit and wrap. They’d break the tackle and get a first down,” said Davis.

The Panthers did manage to stay within 22-6 at the half, but the Pioneers began to wear down Chesapeake and posted a 40-14 win Friday.

“ The score was not indicative of the way the game was played. Our kids hung in with them. I was really proud of our kids,” said Davis.

A 40-yard pass from Adam Frazier to Randall Elliott got the Pioneers in scoring position again. Clyde Ferrell went 9 yards for the score and it was 14-0.

For the second week in a row, Chesapeake’s Gabe Freyre broke a big play as he went 58 yards for the touchdown and it was 14-6.

Freyre finished with 73 yards on four carries.

Damron had a 16-yard scoring run before the half and it was 22-6.

Ferrell had another 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Jake Barr added a 25-yard scamper as the lead went to 34-6.

Chesapeake’s final score came on a 5-yard run by Jimmy Conrad. Austin McMaster passed to Brandon Noble for the conversion.

Despite the loss, Davis saw some positives.

“Last year they blew us off the football. This year we held our own. Did we miss tackles? Yes. Did they catch us with guys in the wrong place? Yeah. But give them credit. They gave us a lot of different looks and their quarterback was on target.”
