GALLIPOLIS — Charles J. Derifield Jr, 85, of Gallipolis passed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Scenic Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Lawrence County, Ky., to the late Charles and Mary (Kitchen) Derifield on Oct. 27, 1923. Charles moved with his family as a small child to Deering and was a graduate of Coal Grove High School in the class of 1942. He was a watch repairman by trade for more than 60 years and was the owner and operator of the Derifield Jewelry store in Gallipolis. Charles was stricken with polio at the young age of 3, but overcame his severe handicap and was self sufficient up until the last two years of his life. He loved to watch the birds from his window and always made sure the feeder was full. They will certainly miss his care.
Charles is survived by sister Beatrice (Vernon) Stuckey of Orrville; brothers, David Derifield of Ironton and James (Jinx) Derifield of Ashland, Ky; as well as a special angel friend, Lorna Johnson of West Columbia, W.Va. He will also be missed by several nieces and nephews who dearly loved “Uncle Chuck.”
In addition to his parents Charles was preceded in death by three brothers, Chester, Dewey, and Ronnie; and three sisters, Evilena, Gladys, and Mabel.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home with Pastor Glenn Rowe officiating. Interment will follow at the Ice Creek Cemetery in Deering. Calling hours will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
