HERALD SMITH, JR.

Herald Leonydus Smith Jr., 79, of Ironton, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Constance Joann Fossett Smith.
He was born on June 15, 1930, in Smithfield. He was the son of the late Herald L Smith(Dorothy) and Bertha Harris Smith. He retired from Armco Steel after 32 years of service and was employed at Ohio University Southern. He was worshipful master of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge 42; board president of Community Action Organization for 32 years; Lawrence County Minority Representative of the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission; president of Ironton Little League; president of the NAACP; and was a faithful member of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, where he served as president of the trustee board and Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Henry Smith and Verl L. Smith; a sister, Rosalie Jackson; and granddaughters, Donita Joann Sanders and Treysha Nicole Thomas.
He is survived by his wife, Constance, and children, Herald Leonydus Smith III (Neci) of Loveland, Marva Louise DuVall of Cincinnati, Robert Franklin Smith (Debra) of Ashland, Ky., Jacalyn Joann McAfee of Ironton, Bertha Juanita Thomas of Mt. Orab, Bridget Charlene Johnson (Aaron) of Ironton and Michael Kevin Smith of Atlanta; one brother, Marion David Smith (Rowena) of Phoenix; 15 grandchildren, Charlotte Smith, Herald Smith IV, Damon Sanders, Justin Canty, Lauren Canty, Morgan Canty, Alfreda McAfee, Constance McAfee, Dominic Thomas, Matthew (Erica) Johnson, James (Tiffany) Johnson, Herald Johnson, Andy Smith, Madison Smith and Jordan Smith and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be at noon Friday at Quinn Chapel AME with burial following at Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 – 9 p.m. Thursday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home.
