Ballroom dancing classes scheduled

IRONTON — Two introductory classes in ballroom dancing will be offered through Ohio University Southern starting Sept. 14.

The classes will be taught by Gayle Riggs and will offer basics in waltz, tango, swing, cha cha, foxtrot and mambo/salsa. No partner is required, but preferred.

Casual dress with suitable shoes or socks is advised. Cost is $39 per single and $69 per couple. Both classes run for six weeks.

The series at OU-Ironton starts Monday, Sept. 14. There will also be a series taught at Chesapeake Middle School, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 15. Classes run from 7-8:30 p.m.

Verizon hearings set for Thursday

PORTSMOUTH — A public hearing on the proposed merger between Verizon Communications Inc. and Frontier Communication Corp. will be at the Scioto County Welcome Center, 342 Second St., Portsmouth, on Thursday.

The hearing is to get input on the proposal of local landline telephone service. Verizon provides service to Chesapeake residences. The hearing starts at 6 p.m.

‘Business After Hours’ at Liebert

IRONTON — The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will have a Business After Hours at Libert. 

The event will be held Thursday, from 5:30. until 7:30 p.m. at the plant at 3040 South Ninth St. 

Learn to can your garden goodies

ASHLAND, Ky. — Learn tips on canning fruits and vegetables at one of two free workshops at Boyd County Public Library this month.

The classes are presented by the Boyd County Extension Office, and will include the basics on canning and other methods to stretch your garden harvest into the winter months, and beyond.

The Lunchtime Gardening Tips class at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave., is Wednesday, Sept. 16, at noon in the Reading Garden, weather permitting.

Participants are invited to bring their lunch, and the library will provide drinks.

At Summit, 1016 Summit Road, the Late Bloomers class takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. Drinks are also provided.
