St. Joseph, Point Pleasant battle to 3-3 deadlock in soccer

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Once the St. Joseph Flyers got going, they made sure the Point Pleasant Black Knights stopped.

The Black Knights took a 2-0 lead 16 minutes into the game Thursday, but the Flyers came storming back and the two teams finished in a 3-3 deadlock that featured a defensive battle.

Point Pleasant had only 10 shots on goal and the Flyers just eight. Both teams had five corner kicks.

Payton Blair led the Flyers as he scored all three goals. Joseph “The Shoe” Unger turned in a strong game at goalie with seven saves.

Blair’s goal at the 38-minute mark put St. Joseph on the scoreboard after the Black Knights got goals from Parker Hill and Preston Rairden.

The Flyers tied the game on a Blair’s second goal at the 45-minute mark and put his team ahead at 67 minutes.

The Black Knights — held scoreless for nearly 57 minutes — tied the game on an unassisted goal by Jordan Messick in the 73rd minute. Messick had an assist on the Knights’ first goal.

St. Joseph plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at South Point.
