Who is the “Father of Ironton” and what is the murder mystery of Lawrence County?

Who is the lady that the Civil War song, “Lorena,” was named for? Who is the Russian dancer who is interred in a mausoleum or the state representative who has been put in his family mausoleum here in Woodland Cemetery? Who is the first lady ironmaster we have record of?

This is the reason the historical society gives the public a chance to hear of some of the important people who lived here long ago.

The historical walk takes time, effort and work to produce it every year. Many people are behind the scenes and are never noticed.

Lawrence County is somewhat looked over when the state of Ohio is mentioned. Why isn’t the county noticed as being the southern part of Ohio?

Therefore, can we receive more education given to our children and adults of the importance that was part of the our past.

We have had U.S. politicians from Lawrence County who are forgotten. Many rich people lived here. You can see the beautiful big homes and know that these people built them for their families.

Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. is drawing close so we are inviting you to come and take part in the “Walk.” We guarantee you will enjoy it.

The following poem was sent to me and definitely applies to what we are talking about.

A Man Lives As Long As He is Remembered

Your tombstone stands among the rest, neglected and alone.

The name and date are chiseled out on polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care.It is too late to mourn.

You did not know that I exist. You died and I was born.

Yet each of us are cells of you in flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse. Entirely not our own.

Dear Ancestor, the place you filled one hundred years ago spreads out among the ones you left who would have loved you so.

I wonder if you lived and loved. I wonder if you knew that someday I would find this spot, and come to visit you.
