LUCASVILLE — You’ve heard of a three-minute egg? Well, the Chesapeake Panthers ran into a three-minute meltdown.

The Panthers trailed the Lucasville Valley Indians 16-6 with less than five minutes to play in the first half. But in a span of three minutes the spread jumped to 31 points.

The Panthers (1-3) never recovered as they lost 44-14 to the Indians Friday.

“We didn’t play very well and they did play well,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis. “They made plays. They’re a very good team.”

Both teams had trouble moving the ball in the first quarter until Zach Utley hit Alex Holcomb with a 12-yard TD pass with 6:26 on the clock.

Evan Richard kicked a 24-yard field goal just before the end of the quarter and it was 9-0.

Holcomb had a 19-yard run for a touchdown to put the Indians’ lead at 16-0, but Chesapeake answered with a scoring drive capped by Colton Lindsey’s 1-yard quarterback sneak and it was 16-6 with 4:54 left in the half.

Then disaster hit.

A long punt return set up a 24-yard touchdown run by Luke Keller and it was 23-6.

After a quick three-and-out by Chesapeake, Valley scored on a 27-yard pass from Utley to Blake Yates.

Another three-and-out gave the Indians back the ball and Holcomb bolted 46 yards for the score and it was 37-6 at the half.

Chesapeake’s first unit ran 30 times for 177 yards with Gabe Freyre getting 76 yards on 12 carries. Peter Hintz added 59 yards on eight attempts.

Holcomb had 81 yards on five carries for the Indians.
