Point Pleasant blanks Pointers

SOUTH POINT — Point Pleasant made use of their off week prior to the meeting with South Point, as the Black Knights used a balanced offensive attack in a 35-0 win.

Both passing and rushing put up identical yards of 137 a piece, and the Black Knights defense held the Pointers to 115 yards on offense.

“We played a good Point Pleasant team tonight, and we just could not get going out of the gate tonight,” said South Point coach Doug Shilot.

“After the first half, I thought our kids came in and regrouped, and we had a good effort defensively in the second half. The effort in the second half is something that we can use to build off of heading into next week.”

The first quarter saw only one score. It was provided by a Nathan Roberts 84-yard return on the game’s opening kickoff. Brock McClung added the extra-point and Point Pleasant led 7-0 with 11:46 to go.

After a South Point (0-4) punt to open the second quarter, the Black Knights extended the lead to 14-0 on a Chris Blankenship 4-yard run. McClung added the extra-point at the 8:39 mark in the second.

The drive covered 63 yards in six plays and was highlighted by a 46-yard pass from Eric Roberts to Nathan Roberts.

After both teams punted on the next three series, Eric Roberts found Nathan Roberts for a 44-yard touchdown. McClung added the extra-point and the lead was 21-0 with 3:24 to go in the half.

After the Pointers third punt of the second quarter, the Black Knights scored quickly again, when Nathan Roberts raced down the sideline for a 68-yard touchdown on the second play of the series. McClung added the extra-point and the lead at the half was 28-0.

Nathan Roberts finished the game with 68-yards rushing, and he caught three passes for 95 yards and a score.

Point Pleasant set the final score with 9:20 to go in the fourth quarter when Anthony Darst ran in from 28 yards out. McClung added the extra-point to set the final score at 35-0.

Eric Roberts finished the game five of eight passing for 137 yards and a touchdown. Chris Blankenship added 45 yards on 12 carries with a score for Point Pleasant.

Brandon Hedrick led the Pointers with 50 yards on 15 carries, and Doug Dillon added 41 yards on 10 carries.

South Point travels to Lucasville Valley next week.
