WEST PORTSMOUTH — Tick, tick, tick, boom.

The Chesapeake defense bottled up the Portsmouth West running game for three downs. Unfortunately, teams get four downs.

The Senators fullback Trevon Pendleton broke loose for touchdowns runs of 41, 31 and 47 yards — all on fourth down plays — as they beat the Chesapeake Panthers 39-6 Friday.

Pendleton, a 225-pound junior, ran just six times but gained 138 yards.

Despite the loss, Chesapeake coach Phil Davis was encouraged with the play of his team that was missing three starters and had several players still feeling the lingering effects of the flu.

“All things considered, we were pretty pleased with the way we played,” said Davis.

“We moved the ball and then we’d get a motion penalty. We killed ourselves. We held their running game in check except the three or four long runs. We stood in there.”

Pendleton had a 41-yard scoring run with one minute left in the first quarter and runs of 31 and 47 in the second quarter, the latter with only 15 seconds left in the half to make it 18-0.

Chesapeake (0-5) came out the second half and got a 55-yard scoring run by Greg Freyre to cut the deficit to 18-6.

But Levi Ratliff hit Lee Compton with a 52-yard scoring pass and it was 24-6. Ratliff came back to hook up with Pendleton on a 36-yard scoring pass late in the quarter and it was 32-6.

West (4-1) capped the scoring with a 13-yard run by Tanner Journey with only 39 seconds to play.

Freyre led the Panthers with 138 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Chesapeake plays at Coal Grove next Friday.
