Symmes Valley uses defense to put clamps on Northwest

WILLOW WOOD — You’ve seen the signs in the stands of the “D” plus a fence to emphasize defense.

The Symmes Valley Vikings must have been using a “D” plus a wall.

The Vikings held the Northwest Mohawks to a mere 26 total yards in a 14-0 win Friday.

The Mohawks (2-3) finished with 39 yards rushing on 29 attempts and had a minus 13 yards passing.

“Our defense played an outstanding ball game. We flew to the ball well,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.

“Our defensive ends Wayne Meade and Tyler Easthom did an excellent job of keeping everything contained and let our inside people do their job. When they did run sweeps, they were able to string them out and let up get support from the outside.”

Easton blocked a punt late in the first quarter and the Vikings’ recovered the ball at the Northwest 6-yard line.

Jacob Patterson scored on the next play to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead at the 4:12 mark.

The Vikings (4-1) had a drive to the Northwest 5-yard line only to fumble the ball away.

But after forcing a punt and getting a good return from Evan Herrell, the Vikings were able to finish their next drive as quarterback Cody Myers ran 17 yards for a touchdown with just 43 seconds left in the half.

Symmes Valley finished with 169 yards on offense.

“On the offensive side we did what we needed to win, but we’ve got some work to do. Our kids came through when we needed to, and I’m very proud of the effort, especially under the conditions,” said Webb.

Symmes Valley hosts Green to open Southern Ohio Conference play next Friday.
