PROCTORVILLE — Fun and funds.

The Fairland Lady Dragons used four sets to beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference volleyball match.

However, it was also Fairland’s “Volley for the Cure” game and the Lady Dragons raised more than $900.

One of the fund-raising activities was to have students donate money toward their “favorite” teacher and the winner had to kiss a donkey.

Thanks to a last-minute donation, Chesapeake head volleyball coach Dana Edwards was declared the “winner” and did, in fact, kiss the donkey.

Volleyball official Rick Plymale challenged the fans to raise an additional $50 and he would kiss the donkey. The fans donated more than $100 and Plymale followed Edwards’ lead.

“We did really well. It was a successful night,” said Fairland coach Michelle Gorby.

Fairland won the match 25-27, 25-13, 26-24 and 25-22. Kamren Mendodoza had 20 points, 6 aces and 7 kills while Cori Gaiger had 16 points and 6 kills to lead the Lady Dragons.

Cassie Rucker had 12 points and Sarah Rice 10 to pace Chesapeake.

In the reserve game, Fairland won 2-0.

The Lady Dragons visit South Gallia on Monday.
