ASHLAND, Ky. — A free core vascular screening is being offered by King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at KDMC’s Medical Specialties-Portsmouth, 2001 Scioto Trail.

A core vascular screening aids in early detection of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and blockages of the carotid arteries. Fasting is not required and this screening is for those age 50 and older.

Vascular surgeon Omran Abdul-Khoudoud, M.D., will review results immediately following your screening. Along with KDMC, this free event is co-sponsored by the Kentucky Heart Foundation, a cardiovascular research institute.

The human body includes miles of arteries that deliver blood and oxygen to tissues. While blockages and irregularities in any of these can be serious, problems with the abdominal aorta and the carotid arteries can be life-threatening. Symptoms of these irregularities can be very hard to detect; an ultrasound exam is the most effective screening tool.

Core vascular tests include:

Ultrasound: examinations of the carotid arteries (the main arteries in the neck, which supply blood to the brain) and of the abdominal aorta (the main artery of the trunk of the body, which supplies blood to the lower body and legs) to look for blockages, weaknesses and aneurysms.

Total cholesterol: this will allow the care provider to understand the total cholesterol in your blood. High cholesterol levels can lead to blockages, hardening of the arteries, and in extreme cases, aneurysms.

Blood pressure: elevated readings can lead to an increased risk for aneurysm, stroke, heart attack and other serious health problems.
