Hornets turn back Pointers

SOUTH POINT — With both teams 1-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, the winner would move into the driver’s seat.

The Coal Grove Hornets grabbed the wheel and slammed on the gas in a 30-12 win over the South Point Pointers Friday night.

It was not the “lead foot” but the fleet of foot that allowed the Hornets to amass 328 yards on the ground led by Boo Woods and Oakie Haynes who each rushed for more than 100 yards on the night.

“I thought our kids played well tonight, and our line blocked really well,” said Coal Grove coach Dave Lucas. “A big key tonight was our defensive effort, and when you do that, it gives the offense opportunities; and we were able to take advantage of the opportunities.”

After a defensive battle saw a scoreless first quarter, Coal Grove would take the lead early in the second on a Haynes’ 10-yard run. Quarterback Evan Ferguson ran in the two-point conversion and the score was 8-0 with 11:21 to go in the first half.

The score was set up by a 43-yard run by Woods.

“The kids gave a great effort, and we were able to make some adjustments at halftime but we just came up short tonight,” South Point coach Doug Shilot said.

“Both our offensive and defensive lines gave a really good effort tonight, and I was really proud of the way our kids battled tonight.”

After a South Point punt, Coal Grove (6-1, 2-0) would add to the lead when Ferguson found a sliding Shawn Morrison in the end zone for a 9-yard score. Ferguson again ran in the conversion to set the score of 16-0 at halftime.

Ferguson finished the game 4-of-8 passing for 53 yards and a touchdown.

“(South Point) has a good ball club, but we were able to adjust to what (South Point) was doing and get the ball back to our offense. We felt really good about that,” Lucas said.

After trading punts, Woods would again set up a Hornet score with a 54-yard run down to the South Point 14-yard line. Haynes would extend the lead on the next play from 14 yards out. The two-point try was no good and the score was 22-6 with 0:43 to go in the third.

Woods finished the game with 164 yards on 13 carries while Haynes had 139 on 20 attempts.

After a South Point turnover on downs, the Hornets would add to the lead when Haynes scored his third touchdown on the night, this one from 19-yards out. Woods would add the two-point conversion and the score was 30-6 with 7:24 to go in the game.

South Point would cut the lead when defensive end Greg Taylor stripped the ball from the Coal Grove running back and returned it 30 yards for the score. The two-point conversion was no good and the final score was set at 30-12.
