CHESAPEAKE — The Rock Hill Redmen traded their aerial attack for ground troops.

The Redmen ran for a season-high 293 yards as they beat the Chesapeake Panthers 34-7 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The win was the first for Rock Hill and snapped a 19-game losing streak dating back to the last three games of the 2007 season.

Steve Lewis finished with 32 carries for 147 yards — both career highs. The Redmen still had a passing game and finished with 400 total yards as Will McCollister hit 6-of-15 passes for 107 yards.

“The offensive and defensive lines did really well. Our backs ran hard and hit the holes. We played a good team ball game,” said Rock Hill coach Todd Knipp.

Rock Hill (1-6, 1-1) recovered two onside kickoffs to start the game. They turned the first recovery into a 15-yard touchdown run by McCollister to take a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

Chesapeake fumbled the next onside kickoff and the drive ended in a 21-yard pass from McCollister to Sam Cooke and it was 13-0.

In the second quarter, Mitchell Davenport ran 36 yards on a fake punt and set up a 3-yard scoring run by Lewis.

“Rock Hill played hard. We gave them opportunities and they took advantage of them. You have to give them credit,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis.

Chesapeake got on the scoreboard when Peter Hintz returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown with 42 seconds left in the half. Trent Saunders’ kick made it 20-7 at the break.

But the Redmen controlled the ball on the ground in the second half and used a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs by Lewis and Coty Davis to score 14 points in the third quarter and put the game on ice.

Chesapeake (1-6, 0-2) was led by Hintz with 76 yards on 14 carries.
